When Lilian Lindsey was applying for her Licence in Dental Surgery, in Edinburgh as no English school would accept her, she was made to interview on the pavement because the dean was so worried that her presence would distract the male students.
She overcame that, and other obstacles put in her way, to become the first woman to qualify from dental school in 1895, and did so with honours. Later she worked as librarian at the British Dental Association for over 25 years, publishing a vast number of papers - 57 - in the British Dental Journal.
She lived for a time in a flat above the British Dental Association, and you can see a plaque for her there.
Walk across the street and into the entrance to Russel Square gardens.
At the inside of the park entrance is an information board.
